HPV vaccination

HPV is common enough that most sexually active people encounter it. A small number of its types cause cancer years later. This vaccine covers the types responsible for the large majority of those cancers, and it works best before exposure.

Who it is for

Is this one for you?

Eligibility is a medical question, not a preference. A physician reviews your history before any dose is given.

    How it works

It prevents an infection that causes cancer.

Most HPV infections clear on their own within two years and cause nothing. A minority persist, and a persistent infection with one of the high-risk types can, over a decade or more, drive normal cells to become cancerous. That is the mechanism behind almost all cervical cancer and a substantial share of anal, throat, penile and vulvar cancers.

The vaccine contains no virus and no viral DNA — only virus-like particles, protein shells with nothing inside. The immune system responds to the shell as though it were the real thing and builds antibodies. If the real virus arrives later, it is neutralised before it can establish the persistent infection that would matter. This is why it works best before exposure and why the series is offered to young people first.

    1. 01

      The dose

An injection into the muscle of the upper arm. It takes a few seconds.

    2. 02

      The response

Your immune system learns to recognise the target and builds antibodies against it over the following weeks.

    3. 03

      The memory

Those cells stay. If you meet the real thing later, the response is already prepared.

    Your visit

    One appointment, about 20 minutes.

Most of it is the review beforehand and the wait afterwards.

    1. 01

      First

      The review

Your vaccination history, your medical history, and what you are actually due — which is sometimes not what you booked for.

    2. 02

      Then

      The dose

An injection into the upper arm, recorded in your medical file.

    3. 03

      15 minutes

      The wait

You stay in the clinic afterwards. Immediate reactions are rare, and this is where they would be managed.

    Who performs it

    A physician reviews it first.

A vaccination at a medical clinic is not the same transaction as one at a counter. A physician reviews your history first — what you have had, what you are due, what you are travelling to, and whether anything in your record changes the answer — and the dose is recorded in a medical file rather than on a card you are asked to keep.

What to do around your dose.

    • Bring your vaccination record

Anything you have. It changes what you are due.

    • List your medications

Some affect how well a vaccine works.

    • Eat and drink beforehand

It reduces the chance of feeling faint.

    • Wear a short sleeve

The dose goes into the upper arm.
