Will it look obvious?

Not at a sensible amount in the right plane. Filler looks obvious when a face is filled instead of supported, or when too much goes in at once. The evaluation is where that is decided, and treating over more than one visit is often the better answer.

Yes. Hyaluronic acid fillers dissolve with an enzyme called hyaluronidase, usually within a day or two. That reversibility is the reason this family of product is used rather than a permanent one.

Less than most people expect. The products contain a local anaesthetic, numbing cream is applied first, and a blunt cannula is used where it suits the area. Lips are the most sensitive area and are numbed accordingly.

Possibly. It depends on the area and on you. Under the eyes and around the lips bruise most. Avoiding alcohol, fish oil and anti-inflammatories beforehand reduces the odds, and a bruise settles in about a week.

How long does it last?

Six to eighteen months, depending on the product and the area. Mobile areas like lips break it down faster than a cheek or a chin does.

Who should not have it?

Anyone pregnant or breastfeeding, anyone with an active skin infection at the site, and anyone with a history of severe allergy to the product. Autoimmune conditions and some medications need discussing first — which is why a medical history is taken.

How it works

It adds volume. It does not relax anything.

Hyaluronic acid is a sugar your skin already makes and holds water with. The gel used here is a cross-linked version of it, firm enough to hold a shape, placed in a specific plane at a specific depth. Different products are different firmnesses, and choosing between them is most of the skill: a soft gel under thin eyelid skin, a firm one on the bone of a cheek.

Because it is hyaluronic acid, it can be dissolved. An enzyme called hyaluronidase breaks it down within a day or two. That is the reason this family of product is used rather than a permanent one — a result you are not happy with is a result that can be undone.
